This is the single most important question to understand, and the answer is simple: No, a ceramic coating does not stop rock chips.


The confusion comes from the word "protection." Both products protect your paint, but they protect it from completely different hazards. The best way to think about it is like protecting your skin:

  • A Ceramic Coating is like sunscreen. It's a high-tech, chemical solution (primarily Silicon Dioxide, SiO2) that bonds with your paint to create a hard, glass-like layer of protection. It's designed to shield your paint from environmental and chemical hazards—UV rays, bird droppings, acid rain, and oxidation.


  • Paint Protection Film (PPF) is like a leather jacket. It is a thick, durable, clear polyurethane film designed to absorb physical impacts. It's the only real solution to stop the physical damage from rocks, stones, and road debris hitting your car at 70 mph.


You wouldn't wear a leather jacket to the beach to prevent a sunburn, and sunscreen isn't going to do you much good if you fall off a motorcycle. They are both "protection," but for entirely different purposes.

I am smart enough to never question this, but let's break it down: I'm getting a simple, though skilled, service. She's getting a far more complex service with professional-grade products that is a multi-hour, high-stakes craft.


The real skill in a ceramic coating service is the mastery of paint correction. This is the art of using specialized tools—the right polishers, pads, and chemicals—under intense inspection lighting. The goal is to make the paint absolutely perfect before the coating is applied. If this step is done incorrectly, you are simply locking in swirls, dullness, and other paint defects under a semi-permanent layer.

Truth #3: Should I get a ceramic coating before my PPF?

So why is this so confusing? It often comes down to two issues: a misunderstanding of the process and, unfortunately, advice from shops that can't offer both services.

We always recommend PPF first. You can get a rock chip every time you drive, and that damage is permanent. You can always come back a year later for a ceramic coating, and with some paint correction, we can make the car look incredible.


The special case is if you're leasing the vehicle. I'll have a hard time selling you PPF because while it's great for the car, you likely won't see the financial benefit when you turn it in. In that scenario, a ceramic coating is often the better choice for your enjoyment.


The "Installer Bias" Problem Here's some insider knowledge: be very wary of an installer who tells you a ceramic coating is "better" protection than PPF. Why would they say that? Often, it's because they don't know how to install PPF. They will naturally promote the service they can perform. Because we are certified experts in both, we can give you the honest, unbiased truth.


The final reason is pure science. A ceramic coating is designed to chemically bond with the paint and lower its surface energy. A low-energy surface is hydrophobic and oleophobic, meaning its job is to repel things like water, dirt, and road oils. This is what makes the car stay cleaner longer and makes washing it so much easier.


However, this also means the adhesive on a sheet of Paint Protection Film will not stick to it properly. Applying PPF over a ceramic coating will almost certainly lead to lifting edges and a failed installation.


Truth #4: Are ceramic coatings a scam? The truth about washing & maintenance.


This is a tough but essential question. If you search online, you'll find people who swear by ceramic coatings and others who call them a "scam."


So what's the truth? Ceramic coatings are not a scam, but an uneducated installer or, worse, an unethical salesperson who tells you "you'll never have to wash your car again" is absolutely setting you up for disappointment.


Let's tackle the two biggest truths about maintaining a ceramic-coated vehicle.


First, yes, you still absolutely have to wash your car. A ceramic coating is not a magical force field. Over time, a sticky mixture of road grime called "road film" will accumulate on the surface. This film covers up the coating, masking its protective qualities. A common misconception is that when the dramatic "water beading" effect lessens, the coating is gone. That's not true! The core protection is still there. A proper hand wash removes the road film and instantly restores the coating's ability to stay clean and protect the paint.


The real benefit of a ceramic coating is not that you never have to wash your car, but that washing it is dramatically faster and easier, and the result is a freshly detailed look every time.

Second, how you wash matters more than ever. The single biggest risk to your new coating is an automatic car wash with brushes. The grit and grime trapped in those spinning brushes will absolutely put scratches into your coating and your paint.


I am so serious about this that I ask every potential client if they plan to use an automatic car wash. If they tell me they will continue to insist on using an automatic car wash with brushes, I respectfully explain the damage it will cause. I've even had to politely decline the work in these situations. It's not good for them, it's not good for their car, and it's not good for my reputation to have a beautiful coating damaged by a machine.


The bottom line is this: a professional ceramic coating is a system, not just a product. It's a combination of a high-quality coating, meticulous prep work, and crucial client education. When one of those is missing, the entire system fails.
